dentist-in-bromleyWhat is root canal treatment all about?

Root canal treatment repairs badly damaged and infected teeth. The procedure involves carefully removing the damaged area of the tooth, filling and sealing it. You might need root canal treatment because a chipped tooth has become infected or because you have lost a filling and exposed the inside of your tooth. Tooth decay is also a common cause of root canal infection, particularly if the decay has got past the outer coating of your teeth.

What to expect from your treatment

During your first appointment, our dentist in Bromley will remove the infected area of your tooth. Next your root canal will be thoroughly cleaned. A temporary filling will be placed into your root canal before the permanent filling is placed. This is in order to ensure that all infection has been cleared. At your second appointment, our Bromley dentist will check that all signs of infection are gone and then place your final filling.

Why may we need root canal therapy?

Why may we need root canal therapy?

Unfortunately, many of us at some point in our lives will get a tooth infection. It is caused by factors such as: fillings that have been leaking; tooth trauma and damage from accident or injury and most commonly; tooth decay.

root-canal-therapy-in-bromleyThe roots of our teeth are not visible to us. They’re buried deep into our gums, attached to the jawbone. The top of our tooth that’s visible to us is called the crown and our dental pulp is located in the centre of our teeth. Root canal therapy is needed when the pulp of a tooth has been infected causing it to die. We may know this is happening because we notice tooth pain (especially when eating or drinking cold or hot items) or our tooth may appear to be loose.

How does root canal therapy work?

Root canal therapy in Bromley is performed by our team of dentists at All Smiles Dental when the root of a tooth is infected. The treatment involves removing bacteria from the root canal. A sealant is then used to fill the root canal and a filling or crown will be added to complete the procedure. Root canal treatment should not be painful as it’s usually performed under a local anesthetic and on average a tooth can last around 10 years more after a root canal treatment.

As an alternative to root canal therapy in Bromley, at All Smiles Dental we can perform a tooth extraction to rid the mouth of the infection. However, this is not recommended as missing teeth can cause other problems such as: problems with eating, talking and facial appearance.

As well as root canal therapy, Bromley, at All Smiles Dental we offer our patients other general dentistry treatments. Professional teeth whitening can help rid the teeth of plaque build-up, which can often be the cause of gum disease. Normal dental fillings may be needed for people who have tooth decay that has not reached the pulp hence no infection is present.

Root Canal Therapy

Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy is one of those dental terms that makes even brave patients nervous. Fortunately, it sounds far more scary than it actually is, and if your dentist discovers you need root canal therapy, it’s vital that you have it. Without it, you could end up losing your tooth. Treatment options for missing teeth would be recommended if this was the case. read more here.

root canal therapyMost patients report that the procedure, usually carried out under local anaesthetic, feels no worse than having a filling, although your appointment will be longer because root canal therapy is a skilled and delicate procedure.

Patients need root canal therapy – or endodontics, to give it its official name – when the pulp at the centre of their tooth becomes infected by bacteria. This can happen as the result of untreated tooth decay or through an injury to your tooth. Left untreated, this infection can spread through the tooth’s root canal system, eventually leading to a painful dental abscess and even to tooth loss.

The aim of the treatment is to cleanse all traces of infection from the root canal system, using special tools. In most cases you will need two visits to the practice, because this is a highly-skilled and time-consuming treatment, and because we want to ensure all infection has gone before permanently filling the tooth.

At your first appointment, your dentist will remove the infected pulp and carefully clean and shape the root canal ready for filling. If you have an abscess this will be drained at the same time to help get you out of pain. A temporary filling will then be placed to protect the tooth while it settles.

Your second appointment will be shorter. Here, your dentist will check that the infection is fully cleared before filling the tooth. In many cases, it is recommended that a crown is placed on top of a root treated tooth to give it extra strength.
