Dental crowns, sometimes referred to as caps, are artificial dental restorations that are used to fix and strengthen teeth that have been broken, weakened by decay, have very large fillings or have been root treated.
As well as providing extra strength, crowns are carefully shaped to look like a natural tooth. If you need a crown, your tooth will be carefully prepared and shaped to receive it.
Many materials have been used to make crowns over the years, including porcelain, ceramic, glass and gold alloy. At All Smiles Dental Practice, we create tooth-coloured crowns, which are closely matched to the natural colour of your teeth. These are both strong and aesthetically pleasing, and nobody will notice them because they look highly natural.
So, why would you need a crown?
- Your tooth is damaged by injury or decay
- You have a very large filling
- You have had root canal therapy
- You have an old filling that is discoloured and want it to look more natural
- You are having a bridge or denture fitted to replace a missing tooth, and need a crown to support it
Whatever reason you may need a crown for, the process is the same. First, your dentist will prepare your tooth and make it the perfect shape to receive a crown. Some of the outer surface of the tooth will be removed, leaving a strong inner core. Your crown will be made to the exact same thickness as the amount of tooth removed.
Next, your dentist will take an impression of your tooth and of the opposite jaw. These impressions are sent to our laboratory, along with information about the shade of your crown. At this appointment you will be fitted with a temporary crown to protect your tooth.
Once your permanent crown is ready, you will be called back for a second appointment to have it fitted. Your dentist will check that you are happy with the fit and appearance of your crown before it is permanently fixed in place using dental cement. With stringent care, your crown should last you many years.
